Dagon

I recently ran across this great little story tucked away in the old testament. It’s not a particularly popular story, but I think it’s really neat. The Philistines had a national god named Dagon. If you check out Judges 16:23-24 you’ll find out that they thought pretty highly of him.
This past Sunday, Pastor Gary was speaking at New Life on the book of 1 Samuel where the Philistines had stolen the ark of God. If we read a little bit further in the story we find out what happens to the Philistines while the ark is in their posession. 1 Samuel 5:1-7
Dagon was basically a statue. When the Philistines brought the ark of God into the house of Dagon, the bible tells us that the next morning they found Dagon had fallen on his face before the ark. It was as though their god was worshipping our God! So the Philistines pick up their little statue and put him back on the shelf. Guess what? The next morning he’s right back on the floor again but this time his arms were broken off.
I love this story. It’s a not so subtle reminder that there is no god like our God!
